Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, alleging that Modi is unable to confront former US President Donald Trump due to an ongoing US investigation into the Adani Group, which could expose sensitive financial links.

Taking to social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi claimed: “India, please understand: The reason PM Modi cannot stand up to President Trump despite his repeated threats is the ongoing U.S. investigation into Adani.”

In the same post, he added: “One threat is to expose the financial links between Modi, AA (Adani), and Russian oil deals. Modi’s hands are tied.”

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks come in the backdrop of escalating tensions between India and the United States over India’s import of Russian oil.

On Monday, Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States would “substantially raise” tariffs on India, accusing it of profiting from the resale of Russian oil in global markets.

Trump wrote: “India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.”

In response, the Indian government reiterated its right to pursue an independent energy policy, asserting that purchases are driven by national interest and market dynamics.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said last week: “You are aware of our broad approach to energy sourcing requirements — we look at what is available in the market and the prevailing global situation. We are not aware of any specifics.”

Rahul Gandhi’s allegations reference an ongoing investigation in the United States into the Adani Group’s financial dealings, although neither the US government nor Indian authorities have officially confirmed links between the probe and India’s foreign policy decisions.

The Congress leader has repeatedly raised concerns in the past about alleged close ties between PM Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani, especially in matters of large-scale contracts and international trade.

As the political heat rises ahead of key legislative sessions and a volatile global economic climate, the issue is likely to remain a flashpoint in domestic political discourse.
